Redline Milwaukee (1422 N. 4th St Milwaukee, WI 53212) is pleased to announce Understanding Ellsworth Kelly Without Understanding Ellsworth Kelly, a solo exhibition of paintings and works on paper by John Kowalczyk, www.johnkowalczyk.tumblr.com. The work in this show borrows color palettes and formal arrangements from Ellsworth Kelly but instead of a pure and minimal surface it is saturated, layered, and patterned. Kowalczyk is interested in the hierarchy of painting and the similarities between decorative and conceptual painting. Fabrics, handmade papers, repurposed prints, and ribbons are some of the collage elements that create the layers within the work, the materials are kitsch in nature but transcend themselves when placed in their high art context. The opening reception will be held on Friday July 6th, 2012 from 6 to 9pm.
